AFIDA and IFA Advance Sustainable Fertilizer Use Education Across Africa

2–3 minutes

The future of African agriculture depends on sustainable fertilizer use, improved soil health, and a new generation of skilled agricultural professionals. To address this growing need, the Africa Fertilizer Industry Development Association (AFIDA), in partnership with the International Fertilizer Association (IFA) through its Sustainable Fertilizer Academy (SFA), is leading a continent-wide initiative to strengthen agricultural sustainability education in Africa.

This initiative translates sustainability concepts into practical, field-ready approaches that support productivity while protecting environmental health.

Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice

Across Africa, students, extension workers, and farmers require more than academic theory—they need applied knowledge in plant nutrition, nutrient management, and responsible fertilizer practices. The AFIDA–IFA collaboration directly addresses this gap by delivering immersive 1–2 day in-person workshops hosted at leading agricultural universities and centers across the continent.

These workshops combine:

  • Curated learning modules from IFA’s Sustainable Fertilizer Academy
  • Case-based exercises and practical sessions
  • Interactive discussions led by experienced AFIDA trainers
  • Contextual adaptation to Africa’s diverse soils, crops, and fertilizer systems

The result is hands-on training that empowers participants to make science-based, sustainable fertilizer decisions.

Empowering Africa’s Youth and Agricultural Professionals

A key focus of the program is youth empowerment in sustainable agriculture. By targeting students, early-career agronomists, extension workers, and educators, AFIDA and IFA are investing in the next generation of sustainability leaders who will shape Africa’s food systems for decades to come.

Participants benefit from:

  • A joint AFIDA–IFA certificate upon successful completion
  • Expert-led sustainability education
  • Practical skills in soil fertility and plant nutrition
  • Exposure to global best practices adapted to local realities
